Tale of The Almost Extinct Animals - America's Spirit Bear

And here i come again with the tale of the amazing almost extinct animals, this time i am so interested in discussing the america's Spirit Bear, they say it is only about 400-1000 of them left in the jungle in the central and north coast of British Columbia, Canada. I first lay my eyes on these beautiful creature when watching this amazing TV Program from National Geographic Wild called Untamed Americas. Their species have a real name called Kermode Bear, but is often called spirit bear particularly to the Native tribes of Alaska, most likely because of the brighter color of the fur they have. When encountering with one of this bear, we will surely misjudge them as polar bear, because of the white or cream-coloured coats they have, and also the fact that them being one of the more amazing and almost extinct animal, especially in the bear community. This Spirit Bear is genetically different from other kinds of bear, it has a white fur and a cuter face in my honest opinion, you could check them out soon.

The Kermode lives only in Canada, and can be found between the Burke Channel in the south and roughly up to the Nass River in the north. Although, no one is sure exactly how far north Kermodes roam.

These somewhat "magical" bears live in coastal rainforests on the islands off British Columbia’s coast.
Much like their relatives, they snuggle down for winter. They lounge in a den, under a tree or among fallen tree roots. Gigantic cedars provide the ideal home.

For a snack, a Kermode will eat plants. It eats berries when available and salmon is a key part of their diet. During certain months, salmon is plentiful in the rivers throughout the Kermode range; although, human activity in some locations has harmed salmon populations.

Few Kermodes have been exposed to humans, so they have no reason to fear them. If tourists become too plentiful, however, that might change.

Also i almost forgot the Kermode name is named after Francis Kermode, former director of the Royal B.C. Museum, who researched the subspecies and a colleague of William Hornaday, the zoologist who described it.

It is truly fascinating how in a moss-draped rain forest with all the towering red cedars which have lived a thousand years, black bears are born with white fur, it sure is the not to miss tale of the amazing almost extinct animal, the Kermode a.k.a "Spirit Bear".

Tale of The Almost Extinct Ancient Animals: The Living Dinosaurs White Sturgeon

I still can't believe that there are actually so many creatures that i don't know exist in this planet, earth. the same goes to this animal i am about to share and discuss with you all, the creature that lived from way back in the dinosaurs era, the almost extinct ancient animal, the white sturgeon. I have always liked Jakub Vagner, the extreme angler from Czech Republic, he is best known for his television series Fish Warrior, shown on National Geographic Channel. And it was this television series when i first saw this living dinosaur, the white sturgeon. They are literally magnificent, they said this creature mostly lived their life in the ocean, that they only come to the freshwater to spawn, they used to come and spawn a lot more often than today, it is said they come more rarely but spawned more eggs each time, everyone hopes that could balance the changes, but the truth is far below all's expectation, they are now on the brink of extinction, what's more sad is that it is not easy to find a full grown up white sturgeon, because it will need decades for a sturgeon to reach its maximum physical appearance, which is about 20-feet.

The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America and is the third largest species of sturgeon, after the Beluga and the Kaluga. The white sturgeon is known to reach a maximum size of 816 kg (1,799 lb) and 6.1 m (20 ft).

The white sturgeon lives on the bottom of slow-moving rivers, bays, and estuarine areas, including the brackish water at the mouths of large rivers. Other sturgeon will spend most of its time in a marine environment, only coming into rivers to spawn. They are well-adapted to finding food drifting by with their excellent sense of smell and taste. When there is an insufficient food supply, sturgeon have been known to move into shallow water to eat freshwater clams.

During the spawning season, the white sturgeon moves to clean, fast-moving areas of rivers, such as just below rapids, with gravel or larger rocks along the bottom.

The largest sturgeon caught on record was caught on Fraser River, in British Columbia, and weighed an estimated 1,100 pounds (498.9 kg) and measured 12 feet, 4 inches (3.75 m). The sturgeon was caught by Michael Snell of Salisbury, England, and it was not long ago too, it was on July of this year.

How would you feel if you could actually help them from extinction? Would you do it? It's so easy, for all of you who is moved to contribute in helping this almost extinct ancient animal, the white sturgeon which is also a living dinosaurs, just click this link, Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. Through that society you could even adopt a sturgeon,  isn't that great? I will not lie to you, i have not adopted them myself, but i am sure planning to adopt the white sturgeon as soon as i could in the future, i really wanted to help, but considering my situation now, it can't be help, but i have not give up, i will work harder until i could have at least one of this almost extinct ancient animal, from the dinosaurs era, the white sturgeon of course.

Help Almost Extinct Animals: How Can We Help Silky Sifaka From Extinction

What have i learned so far after maintaining this blog of amazing extinct animals? That is the main question flying around my head, and the answer is simply how we could not stay put just by knowing which animals are already extinct and which are on the brink of extinction, we should start doing a favour to the planet we live in by doing the best we can to at least help the endangered animals to stay on this planet earth for a little longer, or maybe hopefully saved and recovered from extinction. This animal that i will try to discuss is the unique monkey from the wild madagascar, the name of the species is silky sifaka or simpona.

Like you probably already know about Silky Sifafka from my previous post about almost extinct animals, how this species of lemur only lives on the island of Madagascar in the northeastern rainforests.

Also how its population is very small and it is hunted by some local people for meat, man i just cannot believe that, but on the other side i think it is just natural how people's instinct brought them to become a hunter when living in the wild jungle. But unfortunately that makes this one of the most endangered primates in the world. The silky sifafka is killed entirely in the wild, it most likely can’t be kept alive in a captive breeding program or zoo.

And the worst news is that the species has a low birth rate. Compounding matters, political turmoil has disrupted normal operations at one of the sites where they live. The Marojejy park has closed to tourism because of unsafe conditions created by armed thugs stealing very valuable hardwoods.

Their Population is only approximately 100 – 1000
And their reproduction suggest that generally females birth one infant every two years, but there are cases of a female birthing one infant per year.

So, the real question is what can we do?

Help Almost Extinct Animal Silky Sifaka
My take is to keep spreading the words to anyone we bump into, tell them everything we know, the more people we share to, the bigger chance that less people will hunt them like before.

What i get from this very informative article http://ecolocalizer.com/2009/04/07/10-animals-on-the-verge-of-extinction/ is we could Contact Erik Patel of Cornell University and ask him what you can do. And we could also show this silky lemur documentary to students when it is available. Visit the lemur park when it is safe to do so, and don’t forget about Madagascar during the political upheaval, as the Marojejy park website says, “While you might not be able to visit some of these beautiful areas right now, we hope you will not forget them, and that you will continue to work for their preservation.”

It seem not that hard to just give our attention a little bit on the awareness of the almost extinct animals, so that we could help them out even just by spreading the words to everyone we know. That won't hurt, right? Also to get more information about the animal, you can go to www.simpona.org

Top 12 Most Amazing Almost Extinct Animals

After at least a couple of post from me, i now would like to invite you all to find out and realize the 12 of the most amazing almost extinct animals. They are all amazing, they are near, but unfortunately they are almost gone from this planet, as in they are on the brink of extinction. Looking back at how this planet has never been able to cope with the change of general climate, and also adding human cause to it, we could almost sure to predict that these amazing almost extinct animals will went down to zero existence if we did not take action and do nothing at all about it. So i'm here to try and influence you all regarding these animals so that we all could take action and together i believe we could save them.

Javanese Rhinos is a species that are nearly extinct because there are only 40-50 of them that have been successfully saved by Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia and around 8 more in Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam. Illegal poaching causes Javanese Rhinos extinction, which is done by people who want to take their horns. WWF Indonesia is planning to hold a second breeding of this species and they will probably use Halimun National Park in West Java to implement its plan.

We all knew how the issue of global warming directly affecting those animals in the pole, they said only fewer than 25,000 remains for polar bear in both poles. Some of its major cause are human development and poaching have long threatened the polar bear, but climate change and the loss of sea ice are now pushing it onto the critical list.

Sumatran Orangutans are the most rare species among the other Orangutan. Their habitat is in the north part of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Since 2004 until now, there are only 7.300 Orangutans in the world, which puts them into the “crisis stage” in IUCN’s red list. A second breeding plan will be held in Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park, in Jambi and Riau, Indonesia

This reptile species has drastically decreased 97% in the past 22 years! That’s why the Leatherback Turtle is listed as one of hundreds of “almost extinct” animals. Their extinction is caused by illegal poaching, loss of natural habitat, and human consumption of their eggs  A second breeding of this turtle species will be held in Jamursba Medi, North Shore of Irian, Indonesia, in a sea turtles conservation area.

Frogs, and Other Amphibians

Last but not least on my list are frogs, you see frogs are not one animal, but so many of them are under threat they fit the definition of endangered for this list. In 2009 a study reported that 200 million to one billion frogs are killed every year for frogs legs consumption. Australian researcher Corey Bradshaw, who is one the study’s authors said: “About half of all listed amphibians are threatened with extinction”. Amphibian Ark states 50% of amphibians could go extinct. “50%: of ~6,000 described amphibian species, are threatened with extinction. 32% known to be threatened + 23% data deficient but believed threatened”. The percentage quoted here from Conservational International is 40%.

Now that we all know how these animals are on their brink of extinction, we can't just let them be, right? We surely can't just pretend that we have no idea what's happening here, at least what we can do now is to share this information of how these amazing animals is almost extinct, the more people know about it, the higher chance the animals would be protected. Let's all hope so.
